I agree with you only on the technical part of marketing, but not to sweep the method of email marketing with the same broomstick of Spam blocking, followed by your personal view and opinion on a particular software from India.
I do not agree on the aspects of email marketing as complete washouts for new customers and is only serving as communication to existing customers. Most strongly on your views about tele-marketing.
Let us do some rationalization; If we were to take away both email marketing and cold-calling in telemarketing, what have we got left? We are left with door-to-door canvassing, mass mailing by snail mails, magazine and newsprint advertising and television advertising. We are progressively weighing cost from small to big, and the biggest advertising budget will be television media advertising. Oh, I left out billboards, bumper-stickers and print advertising.
Concerning cost, email sending is the cheapest, next to nothing, but its effectiveness is also nearest to zero, not cost effective.
Marketing involves a combination of these methods and strategize to reach the target audience. If you were to reach to a million people in India, with a population of 1 billion through the emails, the people with email addresses and have access to their computers, reading their emails. With a working class population of about 120 million people, the size of the entire population of Japan. Emails can only reach out to the segment. Not all of the 120 million will be accessing the Internet, and certainly lesser people have email accounts. You should take into account the Spam block filters in all mail boxes, including Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo, OUTLOOK, Gmail, Email and many others.
Phone Lines.
Marketing studies have shown that people do not resist answering the phone, no matter how busy they are. A soothing female voice on the phone will be more receptive than a course male voice. Cold calling of the prospects (likely targets) are made through the phone lines. Tele-marketing method saw many rises in sales, and their success far overshadow other methods alone by itself. Clever marketing tricks use the telemarketing in conjunction with emails to enforce and enhance their selling points. Sometimes by visitations, and presentations to the clients.
In the United States, where I had observed, watching the Reality series "The Apprentice" the successful team uses email marketing to draw the crowd to a "Sale Venue" during a case study to sell wedding gowns and accessories. Yes, it will be effective if applied to the US market, and even more impact if the name Donald Trump is used. From that lesson, I can form my own conclusion that email marketing can be applied to very quick sales method to bring in the crowd. The teams had only 48 hours to think and act upon an assignment.
Previously, in 2006, there was a German moderator, nicknamed Detronic. He used email marketing to promote a Intercom with Ex approval, which means in layman term, a walkie-talkie to operate in a gas factory, where the environment is filled with explosive gas. He was successful by doing this promotion method.
To address the person you are trying to reach, by name and by history of his buying habits. All these data can be obtained from data mines, and marketing intelligence. You can purchase the data of any type of marketing product from data banks.
I have come to the ultimate means, marketing intelligence. This does not exclude any other channels to reach out to the m , either by mass emails, or by cold calling through telemarketing or mass mailing or brochures or newsprint or seminars or conferences.

Replying to [Admin]:I dont think it is for finding new companies. If they didnt request the email, its classed as SPAM, and not many people trust a company that sends spam, and even fewer people make a purchase from spam.
If you collect email address from your customer, add it to your list so you can send them new details in the future. This is better, because it targets customers that are interested in your products.

Do not throw the baby out of the bath because the water is cold.
Email are considered as spam when it is sent from some unknown person or organisation. As SS mentioned, the combination of using various media, and I fully agree with him. If one were to stick to tradition, the old ways of promotion is by the fax machine, cold calling, followed by visitations and product presentation and the most popular form of media advertisement for the Engineering products was through magazines, where a quarter page insertion may cost about US$4000 to $5000.
These days, the emails messaging is used as a mean of communication, and is getting more prevalent, that it is replacing the letter writing and postal service, soon the SMS will replace emails and communication is done between people on the move. It will eventually be upgraded to MMS and emails through mobile hand-held PDA, and handphones.
To be successful, a company ought to get into the trend, and change their way of doing things, for market communication.

Dear Admin
I think that there should be more options. Like
* Way to keep in touch
* Way to develop new business
* Ease of Use etc.
Email has its pros and cons. One thing is easy to use, fast and one of the best way to keep in touch.
But, bulk mail and spamming has not reduce its utility to a great extent.
