1. What makes you believe you have been targeted?
2. Get a linksys router hardware firewalls are always better than software. With a router you can change the default ports that traffic is allowed for incoming and outgoing. Also you can keep a log of all traffic which will tell you who is knocking on your door or who is trying to pound into your computer.
3.Rootkit, there are some great free scanners out there. I scan for a rootkits monthly.
4. You should always have a virus scanner, norton is crap and its too much overhead on your system. Look at AVG (http://www5.grisoft.com/doc/products-home-and-office-b/us/t6/0) they are an excellent company and I use them myself.
5. If you have WIFI it should be encrypted using AES encryption. Also reset your wireless modem if someone is already in there you need clean it to start over. Also change the default password.
6. Look into another operating system such as linux or apple.

Let me know if that helps. Jasonnulph@gmail.com

Replying to [Jason]  Actaully that was a very good post Jason.  Your rootkits shows your knowledge.

*****To other readers of this thread*******

I think a vast majority of those on-line today have rootkits on their systems and don't even know it.  The reason being is that when they buy their systems from a name brand or down load music or software from a DVD/CD they don't realize the situation unless they actually knew how to review all the files being downloaded or already installed on the system at the time of purchase.

If your O/S system has ever crashed you might be suprised that a rootkit may have actually brought the system to its knees.

Best regards,

Ranger

Hi .

Good question and good replies from Jason and Ranger. There certainly is a need to protect your PC from hackers etc

A decent set of protection tools might be the following :
They are all free and go a fair way to protecting a PC and data.

I am not connected in any way whatsoever with the companies or products ,I simply believe they are worth at least considering .

Rootkit checker :

PowerShadow works both pro-actively and protectively to shield you from anything that threatens the life of your computer system. Installation of PowerShadow is like planting an amazing protection mechanism called the Shadow Mode. It is designed to defend you against millions of viruses, spyware and Trojan horse that would love to invade your system.
