I am not a cosmetics seller, but I am interested in this kind of products, you know, most girls like it. Few days ago, my manager delivers a case to me, that is to help his foreign friend find a natural mineral cosmetic products manufacturer in china. I am very glad to take this case and sourcing information through internet and other ways with great interest and expectation, then I found, Chinese cosmetics manufacturers indeed have a long way to go to catch up the step of western countries. Although we are one of the largest cosmetics manufacturers in the world (we have a great lot of OEM factories of branded products), our own brands can not go far in the world market and even can not attract local people’s eyes. Popular products in Chinese current market are come from USA, Japan, Korean, and France etc.

Chinese cosmetic market is developing with great potential, and I really hope our own brands may find an efficient way to go.

I want to know, as a consumer, how much do you know about Chinese own branded cosmetic products?

What’s your idea about the above situation?

Replying to [Elaine Dai]:Hi Elaine,
Nice to have come across the article you posted. I believe that every place in this world has their own culture. To me, China is well known for the long history. For example, acupanture, till date is still way ahead of any other medical research. Most of the health equipment today uses the approach of electrical pulse on the acu point on the body. That is what Hua Tuo did 2000 years ago?
So, the only way to go is not to follow but to enhance on what others have done. To bring it to the next step!

Replying to [Elaine Dai]:All of the TV commercials in China are of Imported cosmetics. The music Videos look like they are sponsored by the cosmetic companies. The public needs to be educated on the quality of ingredients that go into the product. American products have to meet testing limits or the customer can Sue for big bucks. This gives the public confidence or the illusion that the products safe. I think China is doing wonderful with products and image. It will take time to make progress of sales with a very emotional item to be purchased.

Replying to [Elaine Dai]: As a young, professional woman in NYC with money to spend on cosmetics--as many people in China are now becoming--I feel I can comment on my many purchases. [em1]
I agree with many posters here that packaging is crucial. I would almost say this is the most important aspect of branding in the cosmetic industry. If the packaging is interesting, looks modern and scientific, in many ways, it establishes the company's credibility, even to customers who know nothing about them. I think this is key for China, particularly because of the low quality concerns. It sounds as if the quality debate is really a historical issue that has now become a stereotype, rather than a true indicator of Chinese cosmetics' current quality. I think, with the right packaging, a local Chinese company could: 1) win over local customers; 2) attract US/EU customers (especially if the Chinese company emphasized its green/herbal heritage); 3) attract other Asian customers who will equate the nicer packaging with higher quality, even if the price remains low.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!
