Post 1 of 4
Dear all, our company is now developing and first time to do ODM items (USB products and toys). Besides EN71 report, could anyone kindly tell us what testing are need to import to EU and USA ? Also, is there any specific testing company which is mostly prefer in EU and USA? Thank you for your help.[em14]

Replying to [Nice HK]: for the EU: the kind of test reports required is really depending on the product. safety requirements are depending on product design, materials etc.
for electronics you have to care about RoHS compliance, EMC etc. if you have an electronic toy, you need all the testing scope (as EN 71, RoHS etc.).
i recommend you to contact SGS, they can tell you what safety requirements you have to meet for your products and they can also do the testings.

Hey HK, you opened a big can of worms there.

The first thing you will learn as you dig deeper is that you never use USA and any other country in the same sentence when it comes to standards and test labs ... broadly, USA and the rest of the world are on different planets in those matters.

EN standards for EU's CE certifcation can be tested/confirmed by many accredited labs at reasonable cost ("accredited" excludes Chinese labs save for a couple of exceptions). These accredited labs are in many western countries at reasonable cost as I mentioned.

However, when it comes to meeting USA standards you are nearly always limited to using labs based only in USA which cost you an arm and a leg.

For example, I recently got  a CE certificate for compliance with EN standards for a common little product (which satisfies requirements of most countries outside USA) at a test lab cost of $25k. But, best quotes from USA labs for basically the same tests came in at just under $100k. They can shove it.

The sort of tests you need for USB products can get tough / expensive if you have anything in mind which emits radio waves where you need to do SAR tests to ensure the emissions are within safe levels.
