Replying to [sharefen]:Hello, many people will think that my opinion is bias because I work in the petroleum industry. How ever let me try to offer some insite to your question.

A large percent of the worlds oil is used to produce electricity. If they change from using fossile fuels to produce electricity this will ease some of the damand. Solar, wind, hydro electric, ocean waves and even garbage can be used for fuel. I personally am against nuclear power since the waste produced can not be safely disposed of. I personally like the idea of using garbage as a fuel to produce electricity because it is a never ending supply of fuel and it solves the problems of land fills. How ever the current problem is that the ash contains lead. They need to find an efficient way to seperat the garbage to prevent this. Also these power plants also need to use natural gas to help get the fire hot enough to burn the garbage.

Now to get to the other use of oil for transportation. There are many different options out on the market now, but each one has it´s drawbacks.
100% electric cars are limited by the battery range and speed.
Hybride cars are expensive and if you live in a tropical climate and use the air conditioning the engine runs all the time.
Natural gas and ethonal work well for a gasoline powered engine, however the fuel is not always available and with lower btu´s the engines have lower power and poor fuel efficency.
An alternative for diesel is biodiesel this works very well it´s just that their are not many diesel cars on the market yet. Also diesel engines can run on used french fry grease. I have done this with a diesel truck that I had in the USA. However you have to filter it good and you can have a problem trying to start the engine if it is really cold. They have debated using this in the USA commercially but they can not get the EPA approval.
I hope this was usefull to all that read it.
Best Regards,
DR D.

Two-wheeled, human-powered transportation is great for the earth–no pollution, and the only fuel it burns is your own calories! But did you know it can also make you happy!

Increasing petrol price is not totally a bad thing, less people would afford it, so the traffic jam is less and the global warming is slower.

Just imagine those people in China alone who now taking a public transport and bicycle start to up grade to motor cycle, there will not be enough !!

Replying to [David Frencken]:

For industry and home heating purpose, we can use wood pellet instead of oil or gas or coal, because they are made from wasted
wood, and have more heating value when burning. So far as I know,
Western countries used wood pellet decades ago.

Replying to [sharefen]: I don't think we can have any replacement for oil at the moment. It would take us years to have a replacement like that of oil.
