Oil at $100 a barrel is a bane for fuel consumers. But it isn't entirely a boon for major oil companies, either.

Replying to [chuyitian]: Nothing is going to happen to big oil companies. These companies will keep minting money.
There are number of political leaders holding high amount of shares in such companies. I am not sure but have heard that these companies give donations (non-official) to ruling parties whether it is US, Europe, Third World Countries etc.

Would you not be happy if your products are so asked for that demand is higher then you can produce and as a result you just raise the prices to temper demand.

You might want to do some better research before you make comments like that....
How about the price of oil is actually controleld by the OPEC members. They control the supply side of the system, and basic economic reading will tell you that if you control supplyside then you can set the price..... Same goes with DeBeers and diamonds.
What REFINING companies do is a whole other question (these are the people you refer to, eg Shell/BP/Chevron etc)... They BUY the oil from an OPEC member (with some exceptions) and refine it into what we use every day.....
You should also put a chunk of the blame on India and China as well. Both these countries have upped their usage of oil bu HUGE amounts in the last 10 years.... Again more demand for a controlled resource = a higher price.
Getting real tired of every emerging country blaming all the problems of the world on the "older" western countries..... How bout you guys start researching your facts before you shoot your mouths off for a chnage?
