How Long It Takes to Produce BL?
Post 1 of 11
I want to know how long it takes for B/L to be ready once goods are loaded onto ship. I have a supplier that needs around 3-5 days for them to have the B/L ready. Is it really the case?

It's the normal time to getting the original B/L after loading the goods.
such as this.
if the container closing time at : Oct.6 .
the vesseal of leaving time on Oct.8.
your supplier are loading the cargos on Oct.3.
so it taking a little time to get the original B/L.

It takes 1-2 days to issue a B/L from vessel departure. However, shipping company would not release B/L until they receive full payment. Then it may takes 3-5 days to get the B/L

Prior to the readiness of the original B/L, I always request for a draft B/L. Will the draft B/L useful for yourself?

Dear Winnie,
unfortunately the trend seems to be that more and more days are needed for the supplier to get the Bl from the forwarder agent.. We are having some situations here in China in which the suppliers can give us the Bl after 10-12 days after shipment..crazy but true..I spend long time screaming at forwarder agents by phone and emails but looks like they are this speed now.
Normally would take 5-6 days, but here we are getting longer.
I suggest you check carefully with the forwarder agent in charge.
Best wishes,
Alice

Hello there,
Well, it totally depends on who your forwarder is. From my experience, if it its a big forwarding company then they usually do have in house B/L, which usually they can give you a copy immediately if the vessel is verified, even before the goods are loaded, but at least the customs should be cleared and the container loaded.
I have met forwarding agents, who take anywhere from 3-10 days to provide me the B/L.
There is a way to shorten the time, make sure you already demand the pre copy of the B/L, for which you need to know the exact weight or quantity that will fit in a container, then you need to have the containers ordered preloading-loading. That will allow you to get a pre-B/L even before shipment. The only risk you will end up having in this case is that if the custom doesn't clear your goods, then its of no use, but if everything goes fine like on regular goods, there is no problem.
This procedure helps to close the payment quicker, but please not that not every forwarding agent can do this, only the experienced once.

Replying to [baby winnie]: There are two types of B/L
RFS - Received for shipment. The shipping line handover such type of B/L to you when you handover the goods to them. You can get RFS in a day or two from the date of handover.
SOB - Shipped on Board. When the goods are actually loaded on the vessel and once vessel depart the loading port such type of B/L is issued. You can SOB within 3 to 4 working days once the vessel left the loading port.
Please check whether your buyer is okay with RFS B/L.
