If they are purporting to sell famous brand name products then I would give them a miss as that is a good sign of a scammer.
As someone else has reported Paypal is a good step in the right direction but is not a full safe guard as you can only get your money back under some circumstances.
Most companies won't give you references and that is understandable.
So you really need to rely on your own commonsense and what information you can find out yourself on the internet. An actual site inspection is by far the best way of sorting the wheat from the chaff but that is not possible for everyone.

Buyers please choose your suppliers carefully and avoid companies that purport to sell brand name products from China and whom cannot be verified by simple checks.]
If this is a big purchase remember - due diligence, due diligence... ad nauseum.
Check it out. Use folk on the ground, confirm their existence and actual business especially if you are looking for a long term supplier.
Start with a small order and then move onto bigger purchases. Don't bust the bank with your first purchase.
Paypal cannot protect your interests if the folk on the other side are inherently dishonest

i got scammed on my first purchase.
they will make you belivable. and they will show you to the pictures and whatever. they may even give you the low price.
think carefully.
there are some company which acts as a buyer. i know of one.

My first purchase i checked out phone numbers (that didn't match up) and names (which didn't match up).... of course it was too late... i had sent my money. Good news is it was not scammer, my packages arrived safely, just outdated imformation that had been updated on this site but not on other website.
Follow others advice... small purchase to start with, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I divide all my money to fours sellers and hoped for the best, all four came through.
My main due diligance was to see how long the sellers had been registered... if it said 'member since 2007' i moved on.
