Advise me on how to proceed on a EXW from China.
Post 1 of 10
Im from Colombia and Im starting doin business internationally which I dont know much about only theory on a lot of books that I read last week[em9].
I found some good prices in China, I did the research 'as suggested on this forum' and the company seems to be clean of scams... Thats a good start [em1]

I just received the sample and its just what Im looking for.

My actual question are:

1- What do I do now to bring the merchandise safe to Miami since the price term its EXW, how do you think should I proceed to order the pick up of the merchandise, what kind of custom agent should I hire, since the first order its around U$2000 dollars... Please advice me on it cause I dont know anything.

2- Payment its T/T, because I dont want to look like a rookie or naive with the company that Im dealing, I didt ask, what its that anyway?

3-I heard a lot about helpers in China to inspect the merchandise that its been bought... Its there any specific or technical name to this people... what r they?

I know that those are a lot of question that I should have answered before entering on this world of commerce so please dont preach me on that part, my grandmother did it already[em4]...

Thanks a lot

If it is your first time then I would recommend getting price CIF which basically means that the price includes shipment to your port so all you need to worry about is paying for the goods and arranging transport from your port to you.

[2- Payment its T/T, because I dont want to look like a rookie or naive with the company that Im dealing, I didt ask, what its that anyway?]

TT means Telegraphic Transfer which is a bank to bank cash payment. It is not the safest method for payment for you the buyer but it is pretty standard. I assume that you are doing a 30% TT deposit with the remainder payable upon inspection prior to shipping? Make sure you do the inspection though as if you just work off the shipping documents then the factory could be shipping you anything and you will have little recourse for return of your payment.

[3-I heard a lot about helpers in China to inspect the merchandise that its been bought... Its there any specific or technical name to this people... what r they?]

You have two choices here:

1. Large inspection companies
2. Small businesses or individuals

If yours is a large order or a product that requires specialist knowledge then it is probably worth paying the hundreds of dollars it costs to have a professional company do the inspection.

If yours is a small shipment or a fairly basic product then you may want to look into the Chinese Helper option. You can find some listed on the Due Dilligence forum and they generally cost around USD100.

Good luck!

Replying to [Colombiano]:how are you! 1)for the goods sent to your hand, you just need to find a cargo agent in China to deal with the goods. or you can pay the fees to supplier and let them to deal this case. it will be very convinient for your begining of the world trade.2) for the payment, 30% t/t is the best way we can choose for the little amount business, that will be much free for the trading.we also suggest customers to use this payment term.3) for the inspection, you can choose one which deal this case in China, or maybe you can contact with one Chinese friend which you trust to help you to check and you give him or her some tips. they will do very good for your order.

Replying to [Colombiano]: BE CAREFULL ! Never ever wire transfer funds to China, unless you are 200% sure. LC being the best method of payment and that too if you have given due deligence to the company exporting from China. My years to doing business in China dictates that its a jungle of scams out there.

First time doing business is though, but not impossible.

You have the rate you need, exwarehouse, so that means from the stock yard or factory itself.

Now you need to arrange all of the shipping.

EASY: just find a freight forwarding agent, you go online and search for one in your area, that way you have full control over whats going on. You will have to choose a agent who has a office in China, that way, you only have to worry about your side.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO is get the full address and contact person to your shipping agents, they will set a date when they will pick up the goods, you will only have to contact the Seller to fix the date.

BECAREFUL ABOUT THE PAYMENT, since you already mentioned T/T, basically its cash payment bank to bank, the worst you can do is you pay 100% advanced, NEVER DO THAT. You have two options here, 30% advanced payment, and the final payment against Bill of lading or Shipping papers. or 100% T/T against Bill of Lading or Shipping Papers, depends on the size of your merchandise.

Bill of lading or Shipping or freight papers, are basically the owner ship of the shipment and a prove to you that the goods have been really send. After you receive a copy of one of these papers only then you should initiate the final payment.

NOW COMES THE IMPORTANT PART: After having done all that, make sure you tell your forwarding agent to inspect the goods, on your behalf in china. Before you order anything, find out what the custom and tax cost will be on the particular item.

DON´T FORGET TO ADD: the shipping cost and the Tax and Customs incured on the product, this will add up to the price.

FINALLY, see not so though, just find the right shipping agent and its a piece of cake.

Peace out
