Replying to [Amzy]:Because of the many discrepancies between sizing systems and the differences between manufacturers, it is never a good idea to go for unique sizing system. Sellers should measure the clothes and list in centimeters and inches, and buyers should request this information to compare to their clothes.

Before buying clothes online check the sellers return policy, as there is a good chance you will end up with a size that does not fit perfectly.

I think each European country has its own national standards on clothing sizes. But now the EN 13402, a European standard for labeling clothes sizes is expected to replace many of these. This system is based on body dimensions, measured in centimetres.

The American standard sizes for apparel is an outdated system since it was developed based on average American body measurements during the civil war. There's definitely a big difference in American body measurements nowadays and what with the change in the ethnicity composition as well. My sisters-in-law in USA complain that women's sizes are hardly consistent and quite unreliable. They may buy size S tops and size L skirts and whatnot. My brothers don't seem to complain. So it's all ad hoc sizing it seems. A huge project called Size USA is underway to address the issue but it would take time. I guess each garment company needs to focus on their target market and make the sizes accordingly.

Replying to [Amzy]: It means the difference between the two continent sizes. American sizes are larger then the European sizes, so the American size cloths cannot be used in Europe.
