Hi, I am new to Alibaba,

I am a Canadian currently living and working in Dubai (2.5 years) as an English teacher but moving to Shanghai November 1.

The purpose of this thread is to keep my grammatical skills sharp and to provide an opportunity for those of you studying English to ask any English-related question you want. I will try my best to draw from my English instructing experience to answer your question, and I encourage other native speakers to join in.

Hope you find this helpful!

Ryan, hi. As a Brit, and I speak English OK, I wanted to comment that you are a star. To give up your time without charge is very good of you. I have read some of this thread and I understand how tough the English language is to learn. Best wishes to you.

Thanks kindly!  To be honest, I have not been attending to this forum post as diligently

as I should.

Anyways, I am still around so please feel free to contact me with your English-related queries.  :D

I often come across a term 'systematic and disciplined'. Like my professor often used to say 'To succeed in life, you have to be systematic and disciplined'. Isn't systematic a 'constituent 'of disciplined? I mean if your disciplined means you are systematic but not vice versa.  Isn't using the word systematic with the word disciplined an overkill ?

That was my question. I now want to share my opinion regarding the forum. I appreciate the time and energy spent by EnglishRyan and professor germex in answering questions posted by users here. However unlike many other users here, I do not ask very general questions like 'How do I improve my english grammar?' or 'How do I learn english?'. Instead I prefer to ask more of 'technical' questions like the above one. I always like to be 'to the point'.

Here are some more questions.

1) Certain regular words in sentences are written in single quotes, though these are regular words.Like He is actually 'the king'.  Why ? I  use the single quote intutively without knowing the actual reason why it is used.

2) What is the difference between a) May I come in ? and b) Can I come in ?

3) What is the logic behind plural of wife being wife being wives (es) and phenomenon being phenomena ?

4) Can you tell me name of a girl that does not have a vowel in it ?

5) Regarding above question (No 4). Which would have been a correct sentence

a) Can you tell me name of a girl that does not have avowel in it ?  or

b)Can you tell me name of a girl that does not any vowel in it ?

and why ?
