How do you evaluate a product sample?
Post 1 of 52
As a buyer it's part of dilligent research to order a sample before placing an order.
(This is
NOT a topic on who should pay for samples, as it's been discussed here a zillion times before)
What methods do you use to evaluate a product sample?
What are the drawbacks of getting a product sample (if any)?
Is there anything that would compel you NOT to buy from a supplier because of a sample?
100 pts for the best response about product samples.

I am inquiring about OEM for the first time from China. I understand that pricing is considerably lower than in North America, but you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot when they ask for your Target Price. What is the best way to respond to the question about Target Price - simply ignore it, or is there an acceptable response that will make it clear to them that you want their best proposed price given China's low labor costs. If it costs you $15. in the USA what generally is the range at which it likely will cost from China? Any broad guidelines would be very helpful. Your comments on this forum have been very helpful.

Replying to [Rizzob]:I also have a headache as a supplier!Maybe I can give you some hint about how to evaluate a sample?
1.Refer the retail price in your home.
2.Ask several suppliers provide you with the same specification sample.Ignore the highest and the lowest. Then get the mean of others.
BUT my suggestion is that care about the sample price if you are really interest in the products and think that the products will sell well in your home market..Sample price maybe 2 to 3 tiems of the mass order price.

To test a sample is quiet simple if you follow these 3 rules:
1. If you know the price, think on what quality you might expect.
2. When the package has arrived, what is the presentation of the product, do you think it fits in your current product line.
3. When working with metals, plastic always test the durability of the product; does the paint come off easily from the metal, does the plastic break or damage too fast. When working on electronic equipment, check the specifications given in a manual or on manufacturers website and check it with the product itself. Does everything match as the manufacturer, or supplier says so.
We´ve done it always this way, and for us it has been working the best so far.

Replying to [Rizzob]:If you are going to be the "END USER" then the evaluation process is simple.
We are an End User of Aquarium Products and also Wholesalers.
We utilise all the item types that we Wholesale, so we can trial any SAMPLE in one of our hatcheries.
If the product meets our specifications and the Government regulations then we will buy it to add to our Stock Inventory.
If you are only the WHOLESALER, trialing a prospective product is a little more difficult.
You may have to involve market researchers or even friends to trial the product, but DONT RELY ON WHAT THE MANFACTURERE TELLS YOU, HE'S ONLY INTERESTED IN YOUR MONEY.

Replying to [Rizzob]: how to evalute the samples depends on which product you buy. Generally, you have to test the product performance to see whether it can meet your requirement.
If the samples is not good quanlity, do you still think they can provide good product for order? i don't think so.

What methods do you use to evaluate a product sample?
first , you have to tell what samples you got . generally , we will evaluate the aspect , function and application .
What are the drawbacks of getting a product sample (if any)?
maybe you will find some visual , performance and application issue , it bases on your products , say electrical productions , you also have to check the outside and inside . if the samples you got is toys in plastic , I think you just check the aspect is Ok , if you got a cell phone , you have to do much more , say reliability test . of course , you have to know that not all the problems are major but minor as well . first of all , you have to state the plan before you look for the products and share your request to your subcon , that is the specification between you and her . she has to follow the request to build what you want and comply with it .
Is there anything that would compel you NOT to buy from a supplier because of a sample?
a. evaluation result on the samples . if it is out of your request , you will not buy it , right ?
b. price
c. lead time
d. service
e. budget
