Replying to [James 007]:It was scary disaster in this century. More than 200000 people died and uncounted who has lost in this tragedy. The most devastation city was in Meulaboh city. Many miracles and spiritual experienced had happended during the tsunamy, some mosques were stand still even all buildings surround had ruin, no animals found died ( in the morning many birds fly to the mountains way) my firend said that a baby still alive without any food and drink for 3 days on the roof, old man can safe under the ruin building for 5 days and another miracle stories I heard from the witness in tsunami. People said it's like litle of qiyamat day ( end of the world ). But anyway ...all the tragedi is a God will, and make us realized that we are only human being and must accept everything whatever it is no matter how hard it is because we can't predict what will happend next, tomorrow or future.

Back to your question: Which places in Indonesia are the most visited?
You mean places where most tourists like to visit or have the highest number of visitors besides Bali.

Check with the Tourist Promotion Board of Indonesia for the Statistics.
Personally, there are many places in Indonesia, I find fascinating and out of the rat-race pace of life to go for retreat. The most important consideration is personal safety, health and hygiene standard, transportation and accessibility, and finally language and cultural barrier.

If you go for sightseeing, for an inexpensive vacation, to look at the culture, the lifestyle of the natives of the land, somewhat different from the concrete jungles of the urban homeland, into the wild jungles, doing mountain climbing, fishing, picking wild flowers and spending time to be refreshed, then go to Sumatra, Medan, Lake Toba.

If you are the adventure type, want to see cannibals and people still living in between the stone age and the modern eclipse; the right place will be Papua New Guinea, or Irian Jaya.

I have been to these places: Lombok, Bali, Mataram and Surabaya. We took a domestic flight from Surabaya.

I went there to visit the Power Generation Plants by the PLN. There are the Diesel Engine power generators by WARTSILA and New Sulzer. We (German Engineer and I) did a promotional tour to the various facilities.
Besides these places, we also went to other parts of Indonesia, such South Sumatera, South Kalimantan, West Sumatera and West Kalimantan, and nearer to Singapore, Riau islands.

But, still the best is the North of Sumatera, when working with JGC and Pertamina on the LNG Project. There is major change in the country, as you mentioned many miraculous happenings out of the stench of deaths and sufferings, there are churches and mosques that were not destroyed.
There is a HKBK church I visited in Banda Aceh, and it was still intact and became a home for the many victims of the tsunami.

The reason for Bali to be so popular is due to the marketing promotion, the programs and the timetable of activities organized by the foreign managers of the Hotel and Hospitality Business and the Tourist Promotion board. The managers of the hotels in Bali are Australians, British and Irish.
Travelling was part of my job then, and to know the people, how they live and their aspirations, most people want to make big money in their salary, so they want to learn English as the first step to reach their dreams.

Bogor Indonesia became famous almost overnight, after the APEC conference by the leaders of the free nations, during Pak Harto's Presidency.

My boss, a much matured person and well respected, has a host of experience and knowledge which we can tap from.

That is the marketing and sales department, headed by SS. We all share a LAN with a server and 5 workstations.

I like to visit many places in Indonesia, but just for a tourist visit, I will have to find a time of vacation, when I will be doing my R&R (Rest and Recreation). Jakarta is one of our main stream activity and we have agents over there, it is a metropolitan city, full of high rise buildings and many conglomerates and multi-national companies having their offices located in the heart of the busy city. That is where I go most often in Indonesia, and I do go to Dua Manga to shop, the MALL, and Citraland Complex. Also I have stayed in almost all the hotels in Jakarta, the one I have most high impression is the Borobodok hotel, near the Kemayoran Complex, where we had our exhibitions.

I did commissioning work in Cilacap, a petroleum oil refinery built by JGC. That is nearer to your hometown, Solo. The Javanese Indonesian are much different from the Acehnese, and your dialect is also different, sounds better.

All these years, during the previous era of Pak Suharto, the gap between the rich and the poor was widening, poverty began to strike the lower income people even to greater degree during the 1997 Asian economic crisis. Then came the people rebellion, which brought an end to the Suharto regime, and Harbibie took over the seat for a short while, and then Gus, and Megawati. Now, you have the highly qualified and capable president. This income gap and wealth has narrowed during the first three years of his presidency, and subsidies for fuel and electricity were removed. The loan from IMF was repaid, and the Indonesian money coffers are in the black again. This saw a rise in employment, and better and more opportunities for the enterprises and the working people.

My boss' plan is to retire in Indonesia, and buy a land to build his palace there.

Replying to [James 007]:Dear James 007, you are lucky have the good kind Boss like SS [em1] and he has make a good choice to stay in Indonesia after retired.
Yes, mostly Jakarta as the first home base for business..the bigest city in Indonesia. Mangga Dua is the interesting and good destination for shophing and spend the whole days there. Traffic jam, polluted, "anak jalanan",poverty are another sides of Jakarta. I ever lived in Jakarta where I studied and worked there before I moved in Solo.
We put the great expectatation for the new president after election, hope can make Indonesia in better condition than Suharto era.
