How do you identify scrap alloys?

How do you physically identify scrap alloys or metals? Like: monel, hastelloy, cupro-nickel, and others. These are expensive alloys and how do traders price them?

Replying to [jeddahprojects]:A light brownish or tan-pink colouration is characteristic of cupro-nickels (e.g as found with many coins) high nickel content, whereas a greyer surface colour is more typical of Monels, which have higher copper content. Testing with a magnet will only give a reaction when nickel is present as approximately 90% of the alloy, due to non-magnetic properties of the copper. Spark testing of these materials with a grinding wheel produces very short, dark red traces.
Cupro-Nickels dissolve in concentrated nitric acid to produce a blueish-green solution, with this combination of colours dependent upon the amount of nickel present; the blueish colour of the copper is more tinge.
The devlopment of this colouration is also much more rapid than for other copper-nickel alloys such as Monels, which may take a few minutes to develop a colour.
