Sample payment - a kind of tool to test your potential buyer!
Post 1 of 231
New buyers always ask for samples to check manufacturer's quality level and service credit. If you are a supplier, utilize this opportunity to know your customer.

The first is sample payment, most serious buyers know the regulations and they are willing to pay for the charge. They don't care to pay this if they are really mean to like the samples or cooperate with you. It is a warning if your new customer doesn't want to pay for the charge.

The second is courier freight. In consideration if your samples not very expensive, you could suggest your customer that you are willing to offer free samples but under freight collection. It is understandable and also acceptable for both parties when each other are trend for business.

For those refused to pay for samples and also the freight, just leave it. They mean what you offer isn't worthy to be paid, then how could you still hope they might remember your samples and remember you??

It all depends on the type of business industries. I own 2 companies timber exporter & fastener manufacturer.

Timber Business
We have a potential customer from spain which has 3000 retails shop. On our first meeting, he wanted us to send samples via DHL that cost us around US$1300. The decision was very hard, the buyer neither discuss on the price nor on the quantity he will buy. It was a real difficcult decision to choose. Therefore, we scan our last conversation over the phone and email to see whether they are a real potential buyer. After 1 day of research about their company via internet, we decided to take the risks. And beleive it or not, we got a 1 year contract worth around US$1,200,000 worth of contract.

For the fastener

Fastener is a light product and the cost of sending sample is nothing around US$30 via DHL. What make me to decide whether to send the samples to them is when they had been purchasing fastener from China for quite sometimes. And for us, we know where our prices are standing, i.e. we beleive we cannot beat the china price. Therefore, we decided not to send samples

In summary, sending samples payment to test your potential buyers is really depends on different industries, feeling towards your last conversation or email disccussion. Whether it is worth it to samples is basically depneds on yourself. It is just buyer a lottery, who can gurantee that the lottery tickets they bought for sure to win. It just depends your feeling towards it. There is no secret formulae to test a genuine buyer. It really depnds on yoruself to judge your buyer. If you don;t send the samples, you will lose the chance. Any person that has been in business for quite sometimes can real sense whether the buyer is potential.

As for myself, I used to buy things from china. But when the china supplier ask me to pay the samples, it took me think twice whether the samples I am receving are according to the quality i want. And soemtimes, when we were told to pay the samples, I would tell them take it or leave it.

Replying to [Raindrop]:[em1] I don't see why there should be a problem with paying for the sample, if you are a serious potential buyer. You should never want to enter into any business transaction not knowing what you are getting.

Replying to [RSAWAX]: That response could be held the other way. If the buyer is serious in the business, then THEY should invest in the samples or at least offer freight. There are far more buyer enquiries that are not genuine than the genuine ones. If we provided samples for free, then the price of the products we buy would need to increase in order to cover costs. Think about it. the Supplier needs to make ends meet and therefore would pass on the cost of freight to the customer in some other way. Unless of course you think that they should just believe that every enquiry is genuine and deserves a free sample. [em10]

Replying to [Raindrop]: I agree, and thank you for your good suggestion. Nowdays, many business need the samples to confirm the quality of the products which you need, and also it can guarantee that that's what you enquire. It's good for the both paties. However, in the whole international market, there're more and more decieve deed so that we must think of the samples carefully much more the freight fee! [em1]
