They help to look for the items.
They help you to investigate the supplier. This is very important.
They help to chase the supplier when their delay delivery.
They help to solve a lot of items with suppliers.
They also need to go to inspect the goods before shipment, make sure the goods are really made out, and good quality.
They help to collect all the orders and send them to the buyer at one time (to save the freight), arrange the shipment like this.
The above are parts of my daily work as an buying office(purchase agency)..
About my useness, you have to ask my customers...

in the past i have had containers sent to me in uk and have many problems with design requirements, quality, damaged goods due packing, packing info wrong, many things.
Now its much better, i ask for a product like new atv, they find me many products at my price range.
send me all information, communication is easy because i contact English people in China.
They get me better price because they buy for other clients.
They can check the factory first, show me true product pics, see the certifications, agree on order.
I send money to the agent he pays the factory if he is happy, they will check the quality of production, make sure my requirements are met, alos make sure all is on time.
They deal with after sales, as we sometimes have to have new parts, they can get us free parts in most cases sent by air.
Things dont't run 100% all the time, would be nice if they did, we still get problems like late shipping, or atv with damage on body and can not fit al my mix porudcts in 2 containers, leave 5 out. But i get to know all these errors the same day, so i can deside the best action with the agent,
Before the factory would tell me some problems only fater the container is on it's way to Ningbo port?, too late
When i buy items from the internet i like to use my credit card, because if i have a problem in 60 days i can get my money back, this makes me feel so much better, as i know i will not loose money.
It's the same when you order from china and i am in uk, but the product cost 100 times more and the return situation is not as easy, by having an agent you can give yourself less stress like the credit card and buy products without the worry you will loose business or money.

As factories,it is good for you to get the best price,because after the price is quoted,no other middle man involved,and the price is lower than what you get from trading companies.Also in this case,you will take less risk,you know this is a factory and easily pay back sometimes when loss happens.

The actual need a person understand when there is some problem. It is the agent who has has to protect the seller and also think of the interest of the buyer. In problem cases , it is much easier to get problem solved if you have a agent in between.
