Yesterday while I was talking with a friend in China, I was surprised to hear the melody of the Happy Birthday Song that I grew up with in the background.

SOL SOL LA SOL do SI... SOL SOL LA SOL re do.

SOL SOL sol mi do SI LA... fa fa mi do re do.
Gift I was wondering how many languages sing this same melody for the kiddies?

Replying to [Professor Carl]: I just have heard the version of English, Chinese. [em9] But I think this song would have lots of version in the world.

In the group of friends I had during my youthful days, they will sing a Happy Birthday song which lyrics are changed, but the tune remains as the regular Happy birthday song. It goes like this:

Happy Birthday to you, you are born in the zoo, with the elephants and tigers and a monkey like you.

In our church group, the words go like this:

God is blessing you now, God is blessing you now, God is blessing you now, God is blessing you now.

Thanks to Street Smart for his version of the song, because today it made a little girl happy.

She is one of my little "girl friends" (actually her dad is a former student of mine) and she invited me to her birthday party. As I wasn't sure if she would like the song, I sang it to her when we were alone in the kitchen.

Actually I changed the lyrics a little, and it was like this: "Happy birthday to you, you were born in a zoo, with the tigers and lions, and a monkey like you".

The reason for the change was that this way I could sing the "i" in "lions" as a long Texan "i", similar to the "ah" in father. I started singing with a medium voice, raised it when I arrived at "with the tigers and lions", and continued softly, "and a monkey like you".

Well, she had a blast! She insisted that I had to sing this song to her family and friends, and they liked it, too. So I guess it's just the right song for children who like to joke a lot and don't mind if occasionally the joke is on them.
