Grey Market items. How do you know?
Post 1 of 25
Grey market items refers to the flow of new goods through distribution channels other than those authorized by the manufacturer or producer.  What is the best way to recognize grey market goods?  Are there any drawbacks to importing or exporting grey market goods?

There are many misundertandings about the whole concept of grey market.
Firstly many says getting the goods without the main authorised chanels(distributirs) thats why the good are cheap in grey market..
But without buying goods from ditributor, whole seller, from where are the goods bought then ??? Directky compnay, Not possible no reputed compnay byp its ditribution chain , may be compnay sold directly the goods without the choan only if the goods were
1. falied in inspection
2. Lower quality
Other means of getting the goods directly from company is selling of goods by employees , which are given to employees..
Also another point of goods being genuine and cheap in grey market is that many companies like say Nike has many production plants and usually the prices of many time ssame models are different in different countries, so you buy from some market like may be malaysia or china , export the conatiner into other country may be India, but a India will be having its own chain of distribution , so directly the whole matreial cannot be sold on showrooms, as then the distributor will be thinking where the material came from , like one of the fellow members recited the case of johnie walker, so comes in grey market, the material will be sold in grey market then ...From there on to customers or slowly upto showrooms...
Also as materail in this exaple was supposed to se sold in china or malaysia but was being sold in India , so there is no point of gurantee....
But mostly people refer to grey markets to those markets which are selling fake, intimate stuff.....
Thats a total different arena , How on earth can u think of rolex for usd 15 then ??

Replying to [Rizzob / Tarunz} : so you want to say grey items are rejected by company or failed in inspection sells in the market..
I don't agree..
If Nike / Sony / Apple like companies reject the goods or failed tests in there suppliers premises there supplier can't sell those goods to others..[em5]

Dear Rizzob,
Grey market items does not harm the import export trade.Because in country like India where most of the handicrafts and gift items manufacturer are illiterate and dont know about the authorisation or any trade name and logo for their merchandise. But they used to supply to exporters only to survive them from hand to mounth round the years and this is a very serious factors for rural economy of India as you know 90% of Indian populations are still basically agricultural laboreres who survive on off season by manufacturing handcrafted products.
Beside this most of the grey market items actual manufactueres has not capacity to standardise their production quality which actually done by the exporters himself with their quality control department. Therefore , I do belive grey market items are not hampering world trade and fair competition as becaus modern consumers often require lowcost one time useful merchandise to satisfy their family need and fancy. A vast of world consumer wanted new products to satisfy their purchase emotion and grey market products fulfill this desires where consumers well know they are purchasing grey market goods. Its depend on the consumers pocket capacity to buy
an authorised manufactured goods and there is day by day govt taxes are targeted in manufacturing industies.
Thanks,
Banik
