Grey Market items. How do you know?
Post 1 of 25
Grey market items refers to the flow of new goods through distribution channels other than those authorized by the manufacturer or producer.  What is the best way to recognize grey market goods?  Are there any drawbacks to importing or exporting grey market goods?

Can you define your Grey Market items !
What kind of merchandise you mean ?

I for myself use the Grey Market since about 30 years, to buy Air Tickets, since that time the IATA tries to stop this deals !
Also, I sold 30 years ago a Container Johnnie Walker Black Label Whisky, what was delivered to Japan, buyed on they Grey Market. Johnnie Walker Destiller in Kilmarnock and the Japan Sole Importer are guessing until today, where it comes from !

A Grey Market item is an item that is imported directly from another country that byp the Manufacturers Authorized Distributors
Everyone on E-Bay, Yahoo Shopping, Internet Websites are selling the goods is known as Grey market products.
Grey market goods are not illegal. Instead, they are being sold outside of normal distribution channels by companies which may have no relationship with the producer of the goods.
The Mostly known Grey market products are : Wine, alcohols, Cigerattes, Automobiles, Piano, Camera / Cam-corders, Mobiles, Electronic items (Like TV, DVD players, Music systems) etc

One drawback of the gray market is that many manufacturers will not provide warranties on electronics purchased through it. Because the good is not purchased through there authorized channels.

I bought Colour Tv & Music system thru grey market.

Since when all sales on Ebay, Yahoo or Internet websites are Grey Market ?
I bought items from Ebay sold by listed Retailers and I bought in the Internet from Manufacturers direct, is this Grey Market ?
Cigarrettes, Alcohols and Wine are in most Countries restricted items with high duties and could only sold by distributors with permission and marked with tax seals. If you buy this kind of items it is not grey market, it is illegal !

Hallo Robby,

thanks for the clarification !

What I have to reply for this items, is, that there is no grey market !

All merchandise traded in this field are either A. counterfeit(brand) or B.copies(look like without brand) and that means it is a criminal market for (A.) or legal (B.) but not grey market !
You can not talk about a grey market, because the distribution lines are so clear, that it is not possible to get the needed amount of original items at reasonable prices to build up a grey market !

First of all, a must have for a grey market is a commodity either with large differences in pricing or Over-capacities !

Replying to [Rizzob]:Grey Market merchandise is generaly available if import and other dutiies on legal channels is high.Hence grey market prices would be much cheaper than legal imports.
The basic draw back of buying in grey market is that lots of fakes are also pushed through as genuine, After sales service is doubtful, and at times it can lead to legal hassles too.

Replying to [Rizzob]:Grey market offers a good advantage to the end user. One time my company, had an urgent project to supply a medium size submersible pump from Europe. Going through the local distributor will take longer time to deliver and at a higher price. I searched for local traders and they bought it from another trader in Europe. In spite of all these channels, I found the price still lower by a substantial percentage and at a quicker delivery time. The pump specification was exactly the same in all cases. The same case with me on another item (a water treatment equipment from US). Of course, warranty issue would be another topic.
