Cost-Effective Business Travel on LCCs (Low-Cost Carriers)

Years ago many travel industry people looked upon no-frills small carriers or LCCs (Low-Cost Carriers) the likes of AirAsia and many others as fit only for budget tourists. Some industry veterans were even predicting that these LCCs would not be able to maintain operation due to rising fuel prices. But these LCCs are still around, and are expanding and running profitably. Legacy airlines, the likes of Singapore Airlines, is also aggressively entering the LCC business now with their own LCC subsidiary. In India am losing count how many LCCs have now being issued with license to operate. China is a gold mine for domestic travel business. There are many more LCCs coming onstream in various parts of Asia and Europe.

I used to travel to Kuala Lumpur say once a month on a national carrier for around US$270 or so. Nowadays with the same amount of money I can hop on one of these LCCs and be there in Kuala Lumpur at least 3 times a month! That's a real benefit for business people who don't care much about travelling in style on so-called legacy airlines.

How about you? Do you travel more on business now because of LCCs, or do you think you will do so in the near future, instead of paying a lot more just to enjoy inflight entertainment and meals on board legacy airlines?

These low cost carriers are not allowed by our company.
Reasons:
1) Always delay and it reflect on our company image we are late for an appointment.
2) It is from destination to destination and they are not responsible for delay or miss of connection flight.
3) They use old aircraft and cut maintenance cost to keep the cost low, so it is consider as high risk by our company.

I must admit that I always travel on these carrier for my personal trip and I always hunt for free tickets online, I have flew more than 20 times on Air Asia and as far as I can remember only 2 times were on time ( touch down more than 15 minutes than schedule is considered not late by me ) The worst was about two years ago from Bangkok to Penang, they re-schedule the flight 4 times and the total delay was more than 8 hrs.

Yesterday I sent my maid home to Surabaya on the free ticket I sourced online 9 months earlier, it was delayed about 3 hrs

Conclusion their timing is very bad, seems like it is a feeder bus service in the olden days, they don’t depart and will wait until they have full passengers before they eventually depart. It is more suitable for personal and casual traveling and definitely not suitable for business trip.

For time-critical business trips involving multi-sector flight connections I too would not choose LCCs, until I can be certain that I'll not have to miss any important appointments, or am in a position to re-schedule meetings myself.

Very much depends on what's most important, and what not so important and what can be taken as an option.

I read David Frencken mentioned a name Air Asia, about the delay in flights. This is not what we experienced for our trips to Hong Kong. We (my Secretary and I) saved considerable amount of money, the package, which includes hotel accommodations costs less than the air ticket we would pay for other airlines, (not to mention names).

The good part of our Hong Kong trip is the cost saving, we took the MTR from airport to the Kowloon Station, and from there, change to a free shuttle bus to the hotel. This was the promotion during the Electronic Fair Exhibition in Hong Kong. All we got to do is to open our mouths and ask people where to board the coach and when is the schedule for the departure from the hotel, and from Kowloon Station. The catch is ... you must speak Cantonese. That is where it pays off, being able to speak their language.
