To make it simple:

Agent is just a middleman or a sourcing party who only help the manufacturer to sell their products and help the wholesaler to buy certain product in a large quantity.

After the Wholesaler got the goods in a large quantity, then they will resell it into a smaller quantity but not to the extent of one or two pieces to Agent.

So now it is time for the Distributor to sell it in the smallest quantity of maybe one or two pieces to anyone including end-user.

Replying to [Admin]:I don't see any difference in any of them income-wise. In fact, they are all similar. All of them will put their mark-up to increase the price the customer or consumer has to pay. This is the conventional business set-up.[em2] Unless, you deal with direct selling.[em7]

Distributor is a person, who buys a product for a particular market and is responsible to distribute the same to the local wholesalers, and other potential customers. The distributor pays the manufacturer and the manufacturer only sells the goods to the distributor and nobody else in that particular market. The distributor may be appointed for the entire Country and its markets.

Wholesaler is a person, who buys from the Distributor and sells to a particular city markets.

Agent is a person who canv the goods in a particular country on behalf of the Manufacturers and looks after the problems arising in that particular market for the goods sold by the manufacturers. He acts as a representative on behalf of a manufacturers and earns his commission. He does not invest in the goods of the manufacturers, but locates suitable distributor or importer in a particular country for the goods of the manufacturer.

Very often in Asia the terms are used incorrectly so it is important to define the role of your 'partner' as the roles include different aspects of trade.
A distributor typically handles a manufacturers product in a region or country and sells and physically stocks, or distributes that product to customers. The distributor usually buys the product from the manufactruer, and imports it. However, a manufacturer could import themselves, and then sell to distributors in the country.
A wholesaler usually buys from a manufacturer and sells to distributors, often where there are high numbers of distributors in a region. This is because the manufacturer cannot handle so many customers and prefers to ship out larger orders. The wholesaler breaks down the orders into small deliveries and ships to the retailer.
An agent is a legal term as well as functional. An agent can mean that he is able to represent another party in a transaction. Agents often work on a commission of the transaction between a buyer and seller. An agent might represent the sellers interest, and receive a commission from the seller on all orders. The agent is responsible for the selling, presentation, pricing perhaps, but the transaction will often be direct with the manufacturer (also called the 'principal'). The agent could also be a distributor and a wholesaler.
The important point is that definitions vary. It is more important to define what you want to be done in a market, and decide on the name aftre ytou define the terms and responsibilities. The agreement between parties should reflect those responsibilities clearly so there is no ambiguity or mis interpretation.
I hope that helps you

Distributor:.

An agent or agency having exclusive or shared rights for the marketing of an item

Individuals or businesses that purchase the right to sell One Company's Products but not the right to use its trade name.

One of the most common types of business opportunity ventures, a distributor or dealer is an independent agent who's entered into an agreement to offer and sell the product of another company but isn't entitled to use the manufacturer's name as part of its business name. Depending on the agreement, the distributor may be limited to selling only that company's goods or it may have the freedom to market several different product lines or services from various firms.

Wholesaler :

A wholesaler buys goods in large quantities from their manufacturers or importers, and then sells smaller quantities to retailers, who in turn sell to the general public.

(or)

a merchant middleman who sells chiefly to retailers, other merchants, or industrial, institutional, and commercial users mainly for resale or business use

AGENT : Agent - a representative who acts on behalf of other persons or organizations.
