Hi Icejade. I think it does depend on the kind of company you are describing. I mean you could be describing me that way!!

I am an Import Agent, so when I need something I go and look for it directly rather than posting Buyers leads. That is my job afterall, not just to post a message and hope somebody reads and contacts me! [em2]

But I can offer some advice for things to check or ask for if you are wary when dealing with Western companies.

Is the buyer an Incorporated Body? If so you should be able to get official records - Company Number, Sales Tax Reference, Legal Address etc. Do not be afraid to ask for these details. In fact make it a part of your client/customer set up process. Legit companies are used to this kind of thing especially with regards Money Laundering etc.

Does the buyer have there own website? does it have full contact company and contact details on it.

Look at the buyers e-mail address, you would expect an e-mail that is based at the companies domain, ie john@acmeimports.com. If the e-mail is hotmail or gmail some other anonomous free mail service, then does that sound right to you?

Ask for the buyers Bankers contact details and apply for a bankers reference.

None of these can give you a 100% guarentee, but it will certainly reduce the risk to normal commercial levels for you.

No resaon why you shouldn't do business with a free member.

After all, if a Buyer is a free member and wants to buy from me, I would certainly sell to him. His money is as good as a paid member.

If a Supplier is free member, maybe he just wants to "test the waters" to see what results he gets from alibaba. Once he gets results he inevtably signs up to become a paid member, with more resources at his disposal.

yes, because unless we do, how can we judge all free members are not good. All $ notes are not good some may be torn $.
I can say we should have some 1% luck also with us.

Well Pamela, it sounds like your describing me! I'm a free member and a buyer from the US. I don't have a reason (yet) to have a paid membership with Alibaba since I don't sell products here. I don't have any buying leads right now because I already found some trusted suppliers. However I do have full contact information and I am a legit buyer. In my humble opinion you should always Dilligently check your business partner before transactions begin with any member, paid or unpaid.

Replying to [Icejade]:[em1][em1]I agree with Rizzob 120%.

I'm also a free member (buyer) and I don't have a problem as far as dealing with another free member (seller). As long as a seller is dealing a straight deal and have what I need with the right price then it is a deal for me.

Personal experience. I'm in China today to conclude my deal with one of the free member (supplier). I will keep up todate of how it go.
I will buyer stop blocking free member to contact them. It would bring them more suppliers.[em1][em1]

Replying to [Icejade]: I am also a Free member, but a genuine company wanting to do genuine business and mainly just looking for leads to long term partnerships. Check the company details especially registration information in their country, telephone listings for their companies (many countries have their yellow and white pages listed on the web) and a website is often a good indication of the size and reputability of the company as well.
