HI

This is my first time on this site. I am about to purchase some
products and was asked by the supplier to send money via Western Union Transfer. Is this safe? I havent used it before and I dont really know anything about the company... Is there any security measures that Ali Baba have in place for dodgy sellers?

Regards

There are NO security measures in place, as alibaba do NOT get involved with any dealings between Buyers and Sellers.

Alibaba is purely a B2B website that puts Buyers in touch with Sellers.

Western Union?????

I would be concerned, as once the money has been sent there is no recourse.

I am making an educated guess here, that maybe you are planning on buying a Nokia Phone, PS3 or some other BRANDED electronic product.

If so, run for the hills, and keep your money, as it WILL be a scam.

You send the money and get NOTHING in return.

Out of all of the possible payments options for purchasing goods overseas I think it fair to say that Western Union is the least safe of all. It is in effect a cash transfer that leaves no trail. So once the money leaves your hand it is gone the same as giving cash to someone on the street.

For this reason it is the payment method of choice by scammers.

My guess is that you are looking at making a small purchase of some electrical items or brand name products in China at what seems to be incredibly low prices. If so then save your money as you won’t get what you are paying for.

Alibaba provides a place for you to contact sellers but it is your responsibility to ensure that you are dealing with a reputable seller.

If you send the payment to a trusted supplier your payment is safe with W/U, but the fight is to do Due diligence at all times.

Send payment via T/T or W/U or pay pal if the supplier is a scammer they can take your money.

The problems are what products you want, as you can hit a high rate of scams, like we know with Ps3, Nokia's, PSP, Applie, Laptops, sport shoes and so on, so again check them first.

watch the area's most scams come from some parts of china and again sell the products, like the sport shoe suppliers.

if you want to order little Qt of products and dont want to spend much cash, want to get a quick profit you just fall in the pit like most other buyers that loose money to these scammers.

understand the market, know the costs, and you would find out easy the real suppliers from the bad ones.
