One dollar a day is a myth brought up by people who do not understand economies. But it is very emotive
In comparison to the average wage in EU or USA 1 dollar is neaarly impossible to live on in those western societies.
However let us take a look at UK for comparison with one dollar a day economies
UK daily wage is 48000USD/year divided by 365 or about 131 USD per day.
A loaf of bread costs 3USD about 2.2% of daily wage
A litre of fuel for car costs 2USD you need 4 litres just to get to work and back so 12 USD or about 10% of daily wage
Accomodation costs 2000USD / month so 66USD/day or about 50% of daily income
A homecooked meal costs about 5 USD per person or about 3.8% of daily wage.
etc etc and most people have a large number of etc which are not essetial to life but are perceived to be so.
In a 1USD per day economy
A loaf of bread cost 1% of daily salary about 1/2 of UK cost so is relatively cheaper
Accomodation is about 25% of daily wage about 1/2 of UK
Travel if you do not walk/cycle on public transport is about 5% of daily wage compared to 10% in UK
The societies also encourage people to grow their own food so it is FREE in UK all land is owned, taxed and controlled so most people have no ability to grow their own food and are dependent on state hand outs if they lose their job. Most 1USD per day economies have enough food to eat barring natural disasters.
So when talking about 1 USD per day it is all relative. Money is an idea thought up by man and does not actually exist. So when talking about poverty we need to think about resources such as food, water, people, minerals etc and not money. I agree that if a loaf of bread cost 3USD in a 1USD economy then that would indicate extreme poverty but the point is that it does not it actually csts less relative to the wage than it does in a higher paid society. Money can cause problems and if you do not understand that then simply look at Zimbabwe and what has happened there in the last ten years.
So in sumary you are actually better off in a 1USD per day econmy than an industrialiesd economy with the exception that you don't have all the toys to play with. Most of which you do not need and prevent the society for communicating amongst itself. The art of conversation in Western societies is pretty much dead as most people act like zombies and watch televison rather than talk to their neighbours.
