Can China survive without the USA's technology?
Post 1 of 28
Dear Friends,
In a tribute to this week's debate the can the USA live without Made in China product, i would like to raise an interesting issue, which is derived from our issue of the week. "Can China survive without the USA's technology?"
as many of us have expressed, the USA desparately needs China's low skilled labor and cheap resources, but i also want to raise an issue that indeed, China desparately needs the USA's technology too. One thing we cannot deny is that China is lacking innovative ideas and the high technology is mainly concentrated in the USA. Without the USA's technology, China could not develop so fast and rapid.
What do you think of this?
Please express your idea

They have more advantage than China. In a long period, if China want to play foreign trade game, he must follow the rlue which have made by U.S

Shar,
Learn the definition of Anti-Dumping.... I am assuming you were kidding with that comment.
Hon,
The whole anti-dumping thing is a complex issue.... The US (and other countries) use the anti-dumping rules to a certain degree to "make a point" with China sometimes. It is impossible for China to deny that they are the source of more than 75% of the worlds Fake/Illegal products..... For the year 2006 the EU actually states that China was the sourc of over 70% of all illegal goods seized.
So western countries sometimes use the anti-dumping laws (and tariffs) to remind the Chinese government that when they signed onto being a member of the WTo they accepted the responsibility of stopping all the fake products being made........ They have made some inroads to doing this, but the problem is still there... The more recent recalls are not exactly helping the situation and many of us are just scratching our heads wondering why the rest of China is allowing these very very few companies/people bring the whole of China into disgrace.
The anti-dumping laws also serve a purpose to prtect the people in the importing countries from being unfairly put out of a job, because of the (till recently) huge "rebates" (which are in truth subsidies) for Chinese companies exporting.
So it is a two way street. China cannot have all the good parts of being in the WTO and ignore the responsibilities that that membership brings with it..
China is still feeling her way thru all these things and it will probably take another few years for everything to settle down. Until then China just has to keep being as good as it is, and keep cracking down on the bad people who are hurting the country (from the inside!)

All the information is out there Hon, just a matter of "connecting the dots"..
International trade for someone like you or me, is just a matter of us agreeing to a price for a specific product........ It gets a LOT more complicated when you have one government "trading" with another. Internal politics must be appeased (no govenment wants to look weak to its own people).
Then you throw in all the Trade Agreements between 2 countries + the trade Agreements they BOTH sign with other countries + all the UN agreements + all the Military agreements that exist around the wordl.......... and things get pretty darn complicated.....
But still, at the very bottom of it all............. it's just you and me agreeing on a deal for a set price for a specific product....... You treat me with respect and I treat you with respect and that's all it takes.

An important issue regarding anti-dumping has been raised by Foow, but the main issue "Can China survive w/o USA's technology?" has not been look into yet.
China can survive w/o US's technologies simply because US's technologies are not the only one available in the market. Germany, France, (or simply EU), UK, Japan, Korea, Singapore, South America, Australia, or even Russia can offer technologies to China to rival that of US. Almost every field of technologies that US can offer, can be out bid by the other countries. US technologies are not unique anymore, more over, Chinese technologies are as advance too. China are outputting Chinese engineers, professors, scientists, researchers, graduates, post-doc etc....... by the millions!!!!! Except the fact that most are not experienced in the major global companies, these millions of Chinese elite can be a threat within a few years.
