From 1979 to 2006, China’s real gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an average annual rate of 9.7%, the size of its economy increased over 11-fold, its real per capita GDP grew over 8-fold, and its world ranking for total trade rose form 27th to 3rd . By some measurements, China has become the world’s second largest economy, and it could be the largest within a decade.

The emergence of the Chinese economy has raised concerns around the world.

What do you think? Do you agree that China will be the next superpower in global trade?

well....i cannot tell if it is a "Superpower", but i can surely say it will continue to be a "Superbuyer"

Still, China needs more infrastructures to help facilitate her trade...let's see if the Games can help in some ways...

I do not think China will take over US within a decade. Far from it.

China will take over US as the no1 economy if China continues to grow at this double digit rate. In other words, China will have to keep producing cheap goods with low inflationary rate, low labor wages, and China has to have a standard of living to remain constant for many decades. China cannot keep up like this for another decade. Can it?

This is not a possible reality.

By the way, the huge Chinese Red Army is enough to make China a Superpower militarily..... hehehe........End of post edited by Admin. Refrain from discussing highly political issues.

Nothing is impossible! However, for this to happen China has a lot of hurdles to overcome. To become the next superpower it should be able to achieve and sustain quality growth. While there are now a number of large corporations listed in the NYSE and NASDAQ– Haier, Lenova, Suntech, Medical, Vimicro, etc., some of them hi tech, but still more of them remain non-innovators. They'll need more innovators to become an economic superpower.

Among the challenges that China need to tackle include its high level of non-performing bank loans, pollution and other environmental challenges, corruption, lack of quality education, lack of intellectual property rights, lack of transparency/ accountability and the rule of law. These translate to more democratic governance, freer media and civil society, improving the quality of graduates in technical fields, and providing political opportunities for the genuinely talented.

The big question is whether its current leadership has the boldness to undertake the reforms necessary to pursue the dream of being the next global superpower.

May be a distant possibility, but not entirely impossible. Though numbers help in terms of buyers, more likely it's quality that counts in the long run. And yes leadership in breakthroughs and innovations.

I have said this before on this forum, and will say it again.

19th Century (1800-1899) - Britain was the Superpower

20th Century (1900-1999) - America was the Superpower

21st Century (2000>) - China IS the Superpower!
