Why do you want to start your own business?
Post 1 of 24

Understanding your motivation helps you to see past the romantic notions of being self-employed. The questions below have no correct answer. They are different for everyone. Just look at your answers critically. Evaluate how important your answers are in choosing to start a business.

1. Do you want better work hours? If so, what hours do you want
to work?

2. Do you want to be your own boss? If so, why do you want to be your own boss? e.g. creative freedom, current boss is a Neanderthal, better use of your skills...

3. Do you want to improve your financial condition? If so, by how much? How much income do you want every week? Every month? Every year?

4. Does your current job leave you unfulfilled? Why? Can your desire to be self-employed fill this need? How? In what ways?

5. Do you have a business idea in mind? If so, why did you choose this business?

I think a very good way to remain motivated, and remind ourselves why we became or want to become self--employed.

Interesting but you are tying the mindset to the role/job not the end goal this is a problem when you have been taught to get a job, the job defines you.

Try this as a means of motivation

Write down a hundred things you want to do in your life if money and time were not a problem. (Get to six if you can not think of a hundred). (Example list below)

When you have written down the list work out the cost of each and then place a date by which you wish to acheive that goal. Add up the figures and you will see just how much you need to be earning to do what you want to do.

This will tell you which business you need to run and how big a business it needs to be to fulfill your ambitions.

There is no point having a business that makes 20,000 US dollars a year if you need 100,000 USD to acheive your goals. Likewise if you only need 20,000USD per year income then do not try to set up China Telecom. These are your dreams and goals not your parents/family/friends, it is what you wish to acheive.

Example list

1. Buy a house 50,000USD by December 2010
House is a four bedroom 2 bathroom 3 reception kitchen in your dream location. It has a small garden and a driveway for my car.

2. Visit Tokyo for 2 weeks 10000 USD March 2008
Stay in 5 star Hilton Hotel in Tokyo and visit all the cultural sites.
3. Put my parents in a retirement home for the rest of their lives. April 2020
Monthly amount 2,00 USD
4. Buy a new four seater car, 16000 USD
Toyota Auris red with leather interior and sunroof.
5. Never have to worry about my utility bills ever again. June 2008
Monthly passive income of 100USD
6. Give 100 books to my local primary school. 100USD

The more detail you put into each answer the more likely you are to desire that item to a level where you wish to obtain it. When you have acheived tohe goal cross it off the list and add another.

If you think this is rubbish then consider this. Only 5% of the worlds population have written down dreams and goals and those people acheive 400% more than those people without written down dreams and goals.

So the reply to the question of why do you want to start your own business should be to make money, as that is all businesses do, to acheive my dreams and goals.[em14]

Which business? well that is another question. [em17]

Have fun with YOUR list. Should you be married and male ask your wife to make a list. Don't be too shocked at how much money she can spend she is a lady and that's what ladies do otherwise the economy would collapse. [em3]

You don't have to think of these questions when you start your own business!

No reason for me. I simply want to challenge myself. I want to change my current life with my hard-working. [em1][em1]

When I see your "dream list" I get the impression that you go by the philosophy, "why easy when it can be stressfull?" [em1]

Your post excellent, a good idea to have a list.... it is hard to know where you want to be if your goals are vague.... if you want a house then describe it.

Though the end bit about asking the wife and that women spend a lot is not quite true, i have read a similar post here. From my family a woman is thrifty, a good woman knows how to make a meal from a few potatoes and some left overs.... she doesnt waste money on frivolous things but spends, mends, shops for bargains. And no i am not some downtrodden woman, i have spent years working in architecture when younger but still like the old fashioned values. A woman can look beautiful with one lipstick, one nice dress and a warm smile when her husband comes home.

To original post, i have had own business for years as i am too bad tempered to be told what to do (this has only happened with age, when i was young i was good respectful worker). And i want a horse.... I can work hard and hope to make good money.
