I think this differs from shipping companies. It should be clearly stated out in your shipping contract.

Demurrage fees are the fees charged by all ocean carriers for customers using the container beyond the number of allotted days in the shipping contract.

In another words, containers must be pulled from the terminal area prior to the expiration of the LAST FREE DAY in order to avoid demurrage (storage) charges on the container. The demurrage fees applied by the port authority vary with each specific shipping line. This is normally a daily fee applicable until the container is pulled from the terminal area.

Demurrage = Container Storage Fee +Detention Fee

Shipping company often gives you 7 days free storable fee + 3 days free container detention wherever in loading port or discharging port.
, you need to pay extra fee if you can not pick up the laden container or return empty container in time .

Of cousre ,shipping company can offer you discount if you applied to them but there is not a fixed amount on that kind of applications and it usually lies on how well your relationshipment with shipping company.

Demurrage is an old French term used in shipping, meaning

STORAGE. It is usually imposed after a set "free time" (ex. 4 days) and can be very, very costly.

If Customs in your country is acting slowly, or taking time to investigate your shipment, the steamship line and the pier/port handlers are usually quite UNSYMPATHETIC....and they will charge you a LOT of money for nothing! Big headache in our industry.

Replying to [balu1234]:Dear Balu, ur message noted. U see normally there are two kinds of demmurage u need to pay at POD.

1) Liner demmurage

All depends on the policies of each carriers which is always flexible most of the time and depends on the POD where u clear the goods.

2) Port demmurage

Now on the port demmurage, there is a fixed tariff by each port authorities and this varies a our the POD.

Please u can send e your specific POD and i should be able to help you with right informations as this is again a negotiable contract.
