As i can see from reading through the forums alot of people have been scammed by so called verifid gold members who also have trustp *, YOU CAN TRUST THEM TO TAKE YOUR MONEY. Not to say all are cheats, But how can the legit companys be trusted when alibaba allows any one to be a goldmember and hold a trustpass?

I think alibaba should let us all use alipay and act as an escrow for frist time buyers and sellers, They would also make a fair few £££$$$ by doing this, by imposing a SMALL charge?

I am trying to import from Shenzhen, Guangdong, China to Los Angeles, CA, USA. I have contacted four suppliers over there and they all have the following in common:
1) All four of them want me to pay by Western Union (payments are under $1000 each).
2) The payment made out to an individual's name instead of the company's name.
3) None would supply customer referrals instead some supplied tracking numbers from EMS to USA.
MY QUESTION:
Are these normal business practices when dealing with chinese suppliers?
Thank you. Your answers will be greatly appreciated.

This is very true! We did business with a company in Shenzhen for many months. All business was by email. We did not go to China. The first shipments were excellent. However, a very large ($40,000USD) order received was of extremely bad quality. The company would not honor the defects and we lost all of our money, our reputation with our customers, and it nearly put us out of business. We did as much diligence on this company as we could before doing business with them. Of course we no longer do business with them. They are Welgard Electrics and Welgard Power. We have tried in vain to get reports about them from other Chinese contacts but we do not have a Chinese name for this company so it is impossible. No one else in our industry has ever heard of this company. Yes, I found them on alibaba or one of the other trade boards.
Before working with any other Chinese companies, we went to China and physically visited the factories. We also established written contracts with the companies. We did very small orders initially to check the consistency of the quality. I believe it is very important to establish a face-to-face relationship with the owner of the company.

The most difficult thing for the importer is to find out who the actual manufacturer of a product is. There are surprisingly few actual manufacturers. I suspect that at least 90% of all of the trade leads on the boards such as Alibaba are from traders. They all SAY they are the manufacturer. Do not believe them. Even when in China, they will take you to "their" factory. This can also be a scam. Most factories will provide a guided tour and meeting room for their customers who are the "traders" or middle men. The factory will say they are their employees.
All I can say is be very very very careful. The Chinese have not learned nor do they practice the business ethics that we in the West count on. They seem to want to 'get the first order' and then are bothered by ongoing relationships. They want to make a quick score and get out and move on to their next victim. Sad but true!

Replying to [Rizzob]:I have had alot of trouble with the Indonesian Suppliers. I sell expensive watches. They email me price lists, I order and pay using Paypal, and they never collect the money. It is apparent that they somehow get the price lists, run them through the computer, and hope they catch someone stupid enough to wire them money. They dissappear when I tell them Paypal or nothing.Peri/Peridave Imports
