From a travellers point of view, I would check out the forums on Lonely Planet - they are frequented by more people that have been in your situation - a lone foreign female traveller in China (for the first time?).

Where you are going depends on how many problems you will come across. Are your suppliers in First Tier Cities, or in second tier cities or rural places?

In First Tier Cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shanghai), people are more used to dealing with foreigners, but by no means could you describe the standard of English as "good". However, you could possibly get by alone, by getting a Chinese speaker to write addresses in Chinese and you can show these to taxi drivers.

I'll also warn you to expect a few culture shocks with the food. Rather than risking offending, you may want to make up some dietary condition, which will give you the right to refuse certain foods! The more of a delicacy, often the less appealing to a Western.

For finding interpretators, I would do so via expat sites such as AsiaXpat or MoreHangzhou - depends which cities you are visiting. People found via these sites will probably be marginally more expensive, but you're getting a guartaneed quality, as opposed to going directly to someone who hasn't been referred.

1. you need to buy a Chinese mobile phone card so that you can make phone calls with those factories you are going and easy for them to call you.
2. the better find a college student who can speak good english. They will be glad to help you, travle and paid.

leave your phone number or e-mail that I can tell you more.

If you visit and travel alone in China, pay attention to following points:
1. Buy a SIM mobile phone card with only 20-30 USD as soon as you're in China. With a new mobile phone number, you can call and receive any calls in China with little cost.

2. Dial & Call 110 at any time and anywhere when you're in trouble in China. Local police will help you a lot sometimes.

3. Call & call 120 when you're seriously ill or come across a bad incident ( badly wounded ).

If you know nothing about Chinese, you'd better hire an experienced interpreter and negotiator in China. A local Chinese can solve everything for you in China. Good luck, just feel free to contact me for any question related.

Replying to [beachbabe]:Hi,I think at first you could contact with your supplier, ask them your scheduel, but you'd best contact with your faithful supplier(means you have had business with them, and they concerning your business),as it is the first time you come to China,so maybe you don't know how to find a interpreter and a guide, and even you could find one, there is possibility that he/she doen't familiar with the place where you are going to.
