The question of how to do business is quite general in terms of whether you are a buyer, a seller or a partner.
In general based on what I have experienced, read and heard. to be concise, American businessmen are exacting and value financial
results. Honesty is the best policy: feeding them with market share potentials, secure orders, courteousness will go a long way, show keen interest.
Americans expect serious thoughts, good planning, and of taking good care of the name of the person or institution.
They usually extend/ provide help or knowledge such as trainings, and means for the achievement of the target. They welcome business opportunities
carefully so every proposal must be substantiated.
Business can start with your interest letter and citing potentials or benefits.

Replying to [spolish]: First of all be honest. Do not play games with Americans. Give us a real price. Not a price you think we will haggle with you about. Be on time with deliveries and do not short us on them either. The quality is something we will tell everyone about and Americans tend to buy word of mouth. So if you want more business then you should maintain a business like professionalism about you at all times, me wishes you well.

I have been working 6 years for american company, and 6 years with australian company.
Some suggestion:
1. Be reliable
2. Communicate well. Answer each quiry, eventhough the answer is saying that you could not fulfill their quiry
3. Declare clearly the quality you offer. Even if you offer a lower quality of product.
4. They do not like to repair most of the time they would like to purchase new equipment if the old one not work.
5. Be low profile, humble
Hopefully this may be usefull for you
Cheers

Pefect blend of cutomer service and Product features at reasonable price within desired timeframe is key to success of any business and desired by every buyer. Americans are not exception.
