It will depend on the products you will buy from China?, you will need to get a duty code for the products and this will be about 0 to 15% on average.
You can get the A form from the supplier and this will cut your duty charge by half.

The products and be ordered as FOB and you can arrange for the shipping and insurance extra to UK, cost for a 20feet container is about $1500, or you can ask for the cost in CIF prices and then you will have the product cost and shipping and insurance all in.

The port would charge you some cost, securty, admin, scans, customs, but these are very little, £300 or so, you will need a VAT number to import goods, if you do not have one you can contact the tax office to arrange a temp code for you, as you will need to give this to your agent to clear the goods.

You need the B/L cert and othe docs, commerical invoice, packing list, too.

You will have about 5-7 days to clear the goods, and after this time you will be charged per day costs, £45 on average.

You need to pay the normal VAT cost at 17.5% of the total cost, and arrange delivery from the port to your site, and this depends on the miles to your site from the port, but £700 for 300-400 miles is normal cost for a 20 ft container.

Make sure you have the right certification for your products too, and the correct saftey warnings on the products and packing.

Hope this information helps you,
John

Hey John,

Some more questions if thats ok? We are trying this for the first time and any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

I am coming up against loads of Jargon and terminology.

What are the meanings of, CIF, LCL, ROHS, B/L certificate, L/C at sight?

The duty charge in China which you mentioned at being 0 to 15%. Will this be included in an FOB quote?

The FOB price covers what exactly?

Are there any good/reputable sourcers and account managers who could guide us through our initial order?

Sorry to bother you again and thank you for your time!

Regards

Scott O'Callaghan

You also need to understand that Strong gave you some basic knowledge. But I did not see where he included wharfage. Make sure that if you are arranging shipping that you get an exact cost of fee's and charges from your freight forwarder and their UK clearing agent. Or you may get a price shock.
