LOW COST HOUSING, what ideas do you have?
Post 1 of 19
I think meeting the housing need of most developed and developing economies has become the preoccupetion of most governments, and ideas on durable low cost housing will be highly appreciated by those in the industry. Do you have any ideas to share with us?[em1]

What do you think a car would cost if it were made as a "one of a kind" item? I don't know the price tag, but it sure would be very expensive. So obviously low cost housing also has to take advantage of the benefits of serial production.

That doesn't mean that the whole house has to be produced serially, but at least it should incorporate many standardized items, like doors, windows and even complete wall panels.

In some countries you can already find standardized doors and windows, but wall and roof panels that fit together like LEGO pieces are far away from being mainstream. And as long as that isn't solved, low cost housing will just be a dream - at least as long as you also want a certain level of quality.

Ideas? Well, consider AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) panels, EPS panels (expanded polystyrene), foamed concrete, etc, designed to fit together like the hand in a glove. If you can assemble them with at most a dot of cement slurry, cover them with wire mesh (connected to or through the panel) and shoot some mortar at them to do the finish, then you might have found the right system.

Just saw a few interesting websites that might help you develop your own ideas, depending on local availability of materials and other factors.

Hello All

I am from South Africa doing research on low cost housing methods. I found a international company doing low cost housing at half the price. Erection time in less than 10 days. We negotiated a deal for Africa. Souith Africa needs 350 000 units immediately prior the world cup 2010. 1. We are searching for investors for local factory. 2. People to partner abroad with a jv or/and exporting oppertunity from South Africa. Since the exchange rate is poor in our country we can manufactor and export ate even better prices.

Please contact and communicate for indepth detail and possible JV. The table is set with product and need. We ned to supply.

Regards

Part 1: I once made an attempt to manufacture low cost housing from the New York City  waste. If you can get a contract from a major city to take there garbage before recycle, the materials would be all free. First I contacted a manufacture of extruders. It can make plastic wood from waste plastic. Ten percent virgin plastic is needed. Plastic wood is stronger then real wood.

Part2: There would be free glass to be recycled. The paper and cardboard can be created into a fiber board. Machines can press out roofing shingles from tires that can be coated to be fire resistant. The construction materials can be recycled. There is a way to reduce the shipping cost by eliminating the use of containers. The trash can be seperated by wind power.

Quoting from [moladi]:

Ha ha ha, Moladi has got some very pretty forms.  But who in the seriously undeveloped would could to buy form work for his 1st house using the Moladi system???
Yes, Moladi can cookie cutter hundreds of walls with very low labor.  BUT, how is this going to help squatter communities? Rural peoples? People who have no financing options?
How would he rebuild his house to install power? add a room (reinforced concrete is really hard to break and then repair perfectly)
Where is the "Moladi" roof system? Houses are just a whole lot more than walls.
