Dear Lindy,

Yes, honesty and good attitude is the way to success. But those are not enough, as I have found many honest people end up to be losers in business and sales.

We have to be honest, but at the same time be tactful. I remembered a Sales person telling his customer the bad part of his own product, and in so doing, turns away a potential sale.

I am a technical person and a Sales person as well. Being a good Engineer makes me see every product in the technical terms, and the short-comings for every product. Man is not perfect, especially after the FALL, and whatever we make is not perfect either, there is always some room for improvement, and over a period of time, the product becomes obsolete and new technology has to be applied. In marketing, we call this the PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE.

However, I turn the technical knowledge to my own advantage, I did a technical comparison with our product and our major competitor's and only highlight their Weaknesses, and our Strengths.

"Attitudes will determine altitudes" .. someone cited this phrase. It is true,  and also much depends on the direction and focus. Many companies have "mission statements" in their company policy and some put it up in their website. This mission statement is their direction, or corporate resolution so to speak. Let me give you a real-life case study to emphasis my point :

Last night, I watched a documentary on the First Emperor of China, the Chin dynasty. The emperor Chin was a warrior who conquered the states of China from the North West, and took the two last states to the middle of China and the North, next to the Korean and Russian borders, in about 260 BC. He was the first emperor of China, and during his reign, there were laws made to the government and the social order, there was peace at first.

But Emperor Chin wanted something more, he wanted to make his final destiny, a place of security as well, and he build a burial ground with life size clay soldiers, armors and servants around his tomb. Then, he secured the land of Great China, by building a wall 10 meters high and stretching 400 kilometers across China to keep out the invaders. More than one million people were involved with the building of the Great Wall, stretched out to the coast of Beijing. He had a great attitude, and great leadership with millions of subject under his command, and he achieved his dreams, but he was doing the wrong thing. The country was impoverished,  people spent their manpower and resources building the wall, and neglect the Agriculture and other needs.

Later on, Chin had a change of mind, he did not want the extravagant funeral, but wanted to live forever, longevity of life, living to ten thousand years. He went looking for the magic potent pills for longevity. His chemists recommended the mercury pills, and Chin took them in small doses over the years. The harmful effect of mercury poisoning caused him to be paranoia, and irrational, he became mad, and finally died of kidney failure, brain damage and dysfunctional liver.
