Selling products to Africa: Are there many members on Alibaba?
Post 1 of 38
Do you get any response from the African Market, i have just found out about the site (I reside in South Africa) and would love to continue advertising but i am curious as to the response you get when targeting to sell to African countries, i feel the site may not be publicised enough on these parts

Replying to [siphi-girl]:Be very careful the time it takes to verify that a lead is real may out weigh that given markets potential. Due diligence! Good Luck!

As to my knowledge, most of exports from Asia to Africa are handled by Indian firms. They have relatives or friends there overseeing the operation and collection of payment.

The alibaba price for trusted partner status is set at a level most medium sized Businesses in Africa could/would not afford so it is difficult to tell how reputable the company is.
We handle it by operating in the UK and letting our African businesses put their requests and replies through us. We make the payments from the UK and get the goods shipped directly from/to Africa. A bit clumsy but it works for us. People prefer making and receiving payments with a UK based company they can check.on. You do need to have some trusted people on the ground in Africa.

South Africa is world renowned for fruit exports - Our best fruit has long graced the hallowed aisles in Harrods. Cannot speak for countries north of us.
More so on this topic, South Africa is a land of golden opportunity and if one takes care one can do good business – not only in South Africa but further north as well with SA as the gateway.
South Africa has an advanced transportation system, top rate port and harbours, excellent first world banking network, and is (sadly) a net importer of finished products. We export plenty raw materials and then re-import the semi-finished and finished product - mostly due to our highly unionised labour force.
This is one of the reasons that most top US and European banks have branches or offices in South Africa – Chase, Barclays, Deutche, Merryl Lynch,ABM Amro, Citibank etc..
Are there risks? Of course there are but they extend both ways – check out the legal pages of this forum.
We have recently found Alibaba in our hunt for ladies evening wear manufacturers and we believe that great opportunities exist for good manufacturers of finished products that do well in Europe and America.
