Replying to [nalavade]:Ok, so I was curious about this question myself and I guess best way I can answer it is to share with you my last two experiences this year in travelling to China.

I sat next to various salesman, owners, and distributors for American products such as hospital beds, electronics, and high-end retail products. There is some perception in China that Chinese made products are defective. It is very difficult for any Chinese manufacturer to dispell these thoughts so there is an inquenchable thirst for foreign made goods, especially made in Germany, Italy, France, the USA, Canada... This is also fueling the firestorm of Starbucks opening all over China.

You can see an influx of new software technologies, retail brands (Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Rolex, Coach, Gucci, Prada, Fendi...to name a few).

If you have any product that requires a high degree of technical skill and has an important strategic value to a process and product failure will resort in high direct or associated cost, then you should try to maximize your brand value and build a sales network into China so that they will snap up your product.

Bad news if you are from a developing nation, the Chinese are not keen on importing goods from poorer countries. You will have tough going ahead, and the duties are rather high on most products.
