Hello all,
Since I recently went through a lot of trouble trying to figure out the whole CE Certificate issue, I thought I'd try to spell out what I've learned.
First and foremost the CE Certificate has nothing to do with importing into the USA. It has EVERYTHING to do with importing into the European Union (EU). What does have to do with importing into the USA is having an FCC approval for electronic devices. I will quote from the site: www.itds.tres.gov/specimpreq.html#electron
"14. Radio Frequency Devices. Radios, tape recorders, stereos, televisions, citizen band radios or combinations thereof, and other radio frequency devices are subject to radio emission standards of the Federal Communications Commission, Washington, D.C. 20554, (202) 418-1170, under the Communications act of 1934, as amended. Importations of such products may be accompanied by an FCC declaration (FCC 740) certifying that the imported model or device is in conformity with, will be brought into conformity, or is exempt from, the Federal Communication Commissions requirements."
If you are exporting to the EU, then you need a CE Certificate for many different kinds of products (not just electronics). The certificate is not so much for quality but for safety. Using the products will not hurt you (or someone else) but they may not necessarily be quality products. Getting the CE Certification is very expensive. Most manufacturers get the CE Certification done themselves, so you should check with them to see if there is a certificate for the products of theirs you are selling.
If the manufacturer does not have a CE Certificate, then you are out of luck and must either give up on importing it into the EU or pay for the certification yourself. I know of one Australian who had to do just that to get a product into his country.
As Supraguy mentioned there are many other certificates other countries require as well. Most electronic items you will see a designation on the box for CE, FCC, UL and possibly others.
Good luck. I hope this helps someone.
