Hi David,
Please don't think that every buyer is unknown, many of them know what they are doing. I think you as a seller have the responsibility to inform the buyer and guard him thru the selling/buying process, because you would like to make the deal. Try always to read your buyers mind in order to make the deal. Never ever let him know that you are a smart kid, don?t be arrogant. A good buyer will need during the buying process your advice as well as a good after sales service, which is not common in China. Once the deal is made, no supplier is getting in contact with the buyer till something breaks. A good after sales service could lead you to another deal or you could try to cross sell your goods.

Replying to [David Tand]: you should make a perfect service to your clients because it is your most serious interest, not because the buyers are idiots. Also with some follow-up assistance you could gain presence at your clients and win some new deals.
It happens very often that after I had finished some deals I don't hear a sigh from my supplier, despite that I am very interested in their news and special offers. I have no time to press them for news all the time. Yes, small buyers of 10pcs mobile phones and MP3s may not be experts, but professional buyers in Europe are mostly key figures in their companies and are rather well informed about their special fields. Showing that you are really well educated about your products can make a good impression unless you become uppish.

But the problem is if your customer doesn't know what he wants exactly, how can you know and serve him?

Personally, I think the customer should give the details specifications of the products he's looking for. If he only give a rough idea, most likely, he is not serious on business.

I beg to differ to your opinion.

Someone says the "Customer is King," while others like Peter Chan says the "customer is god." But I quote KANEICHI OHMAE 'the customer is the reason for all our existence".

A Sales person is to be communicative and to incite interest to the customer or prospects ... I always differentiate the two, because one is already a customer of yours, buying your products and the other is yet to be a customer, have not bought anything from you yet.

An important component of Sales Management is CRM or Customer Relation Management. The Selling party should have the 3 roles like a Manager.

1. A source of information.
2. A persuader of decision making.
3. An interpersonal role to build bridges and not walls.

I have dealt with arrogant people who are suppliers who 'talk down' to their inquirers. They talk more than listening to the requirements of the customer, and they start by their cocky attitude like "We are Professional People, we are specialists in our field and all our people are PhD and Master Degree graduates." this kills the sale.

[em17 You should get complete details and specifications from the customer in your own interests.Otherwise you will land into trouble by supplying the wrong item.you should ASK the customer even if he is not thorough at the beginning.Treat the customer like a BABY and sell him only what suits him

Dear All,

I think both the buyer or the seller are not the kings or Gods..The "Process" itself is the king/God.
