I deal with the US as well as other countries. I often find that here religion plays a major role.
Example from a potential customer in Delaware (the deal was finalized and we had to return the money because:)You get declined as a manufacturer of martial arts equippment (yes, we do that, too), with statements like: Our company is Christian owned and ruled and Jesus Christ is our lord" yes right, than do me a favor and don't deal with buddha statues or martial arts! We got that pretty often lately.
It happens but is not the rule. Usually they don't take religion in business. Business is business: you need what I make, like the prices, you order. (and visa-vi)
The private sector is often very difficult. As long as you are a tourist, you don't see really what is going on. I thought before I moved here (yes, I am a stinky German

), this is a free, layed back country, yada,yada,yada... Living here told me different. Here are still many racists and too many religious fanatics who want to change the world.
My 2 year old son i.e. is not allowed to go to certain daycares because the parents there voted against him. Because we are PAGAN. This were normal day cares, not church related. He is 2 years old, as he would be able to tell the difference. BTW: he is in a christian day care, now.
If it comes to skin colors it is kind of the same. You buy a nice little house in a decent neighborhood (low crime rate and so on). Nice black neighbors move in your street and your house value goes down by x% compared to other houses in your neighborhood, because black people are living in your street.
This are my personal experiences valid for DELCO in PHL/ PA (a yankee state *lol*) and should not be generalized. The US is like every other country - it has good people and also a bunch of srew-ups. You have people you like and those you don't. And if it comes to Alibaba: most of the americans I met so far are very nice here.
