I'm having some goods shipped from China to me by UPS.........how does that work in respect of Customs clearance? Is that sorted by the courier? Also import tax?

UPS will bill you for the forwarded expense of import tax and provide you with the customs clearance. In any case, I would call the local UPS office and have them give me an estimate of what it could amount to.
