In the middle of the last year we developed a proto type of a new two way radio. I did the research and a alalysis on the demand. Close to christmas i designed 3 newsletter with the radio partialy shown. Non of my customers could identify the "Big Christmas surprise". Each week I did show some more of the radio and at the end of my little campagne I showed it all.
We had not finished the the proto type yet. We needed still the cerification CE and ATEX but I have sold in the first 2 week after the holydays more than 50 radios worth 1800 USD each. I think my ad via newsletter was more that succsessful and did cost almost nothing.

Hello my dear,

Before doin any advertising, you have to know the market, the target and the demand, and the only thing to get all the info needed is a survey. You can hire an expencive agency, most of the time there data is prefixed and quick availabel. You can buy addresses of your target group, you will need at least 1000 addresses (50 cent each) in order to get a feedback which can be usesd for a analyses.

On the other hand; if your product is brand new and you have not made your homework before inventing and producing, you have to produce the demand and this is only done by advertisement.

You have to build this kind of "I need this product" feeling at your consumer group. Pretty simple example is Burger King and there slogan agains MDonalds. In this advertisment people buying McD hamburger, open the roll and asking "And where is the Beef?". With that, BK is giving the consumer the meaning of getting the biggest beef on there hamburger only at BK. At this time, BK cought up the first time with McD.
All the right ways to do your marketing can be read in
Marketing by Kottler ( the guru)

Anyway, to explain and guide you on Alibaba, this theme will be to extensive, even for me as an marketing and management specialist. I wrote my Thesis on online marketing.

Hi Detronic,
Thank you for sharing the advertising for the Radio.
May I ask question: Did you use only emails for your promotion. or a mixture of both emails, snail mails and Fax?

We did mass emails before, and nowadays most people have SPAM Filters which blocks all spam emails. However we did it in a different way, we place the email address in the no show row, where the SPAM filter cannot detect, or we have to send them one at a time, which is very tideous and painstaking.

In our experience of Email spams, we find very little success and almost zero response if we did not put the name of the addressee. But you suggest to buy data from Service provider, but there the question of market targeting. How do you know that your are getting the most appropriate audience and your cost per thousand at 50 cents a piece? For a 100,000 data you just multiply by half a dollar, and the cost will be tremendous.

From my experience, it is neither the email blasting nor the mass faxes that take in the returns of interested parties, it is usually the physical sales visits and demonstration .. as for the products we are selling, which is different from the domestic product you described.

What would you advise for a company who is selling Deck equipment and Engine Monitoring System to ocean going vessels and oil and chemical tankers?

Replying to [Street Smart]:Ok, not to easy to answer, but I will give it a try.
At first some further information about our business:
All refineries, coal mines, oil tanker, mills and so on have to use explosion protected equipment. These intrinsically safe products are designed for deployment in such explosion hazard areas (ATEX for Europe).
Knowing, where to find my new customers, I googled with keywords like Dynamite, petrol and so on. Also knowing that buying addresses would cost a lot of money, we decided to stay with Google and copy as much as possible out of it.

To this time we did not know, how big the orders are going to be, so we have bin careful spending the money. And since the R&D has been pretty expensive already, Google was our only choice. The certification procedure ATEX, CE, Dust and Impact and so on did cost us about 50,000 USD, one year of development another 100.000 USD

After to days I started to call the companies asking for the one charge regarding ATEX. I did not contact the purchase department, because they only want to buy for less, I contacted the decision maker and ask him if I could present my new ATEX radio. And bingo, at least half of it said yes. The other half I ask, if I could send them some information by email and all of them agreed. So here started my little campaign with the Christmas surprise nl. All of them knew that this email coming from our company will not be spam.

And after a second call session, most of them invited me for a presentation. You see, some how I had produced some demand. In order selling such high level products (premium range) you have to be very sensitive, and a nl could be a tool, but it could also ruin all.

In your case I would do the same as I did with my radio. There are so many shipping companies and dockyard on Google, get a nice girl to help you, collect all addresses into a database and start at first a good planed telephone marketing session. Do not use this session as a selling point, because you have to wake the demand in your potential costumers. Try to find the right person in charge and get his personal email address, not the one from his secretary. I don?t know your quote on success (3 of 100) but I have right now some like 7.5 percent by 95 percent response (out of 1000).

Next thing you will need is a well designed nl. I used the seasonal mood (Christmas) everybody was in. Since you have asked for permission, you can send them 3 to 4 nl. Please take my advice, contact a technician, not the purchase department. Try to get a date for a presentation. If he is to far away, send him something for testing. You see, I give you more questions than answers, but I will always help you.
Cu, Dieter
