Fabrics from India

If fabrics from India are so good, I wonder why the Govt of India imposes import duties as high as 101% of Invoice value. Why does the Govt of India have a huge complex set of import rules under which it becomes a nightmare for a honest importer to get fabrics into India.

Also lets get specific. What kind of fabrics are we talking of?
Cotton/ PV/ PW/ Silk/Linen.....??

Replying to [ranjan367]: If it is so, it might be to protect the Indian middle-level and cottage Industies. This could be treated as Anti- dumping measure to protect Indian industries.

It's more expensive, but it's also beautiful. Not that there's anything wrong with Chinese fabric. The ones we buy from China and deal with are cheap and great. No costumer ever complains, and trust me, it's hard to please them!

Pakistan is one of the biggest producer of Cotton so obviously the quality of fabric is much better than India.

Govt. Of india belive that if indians have the potential to produce the fabric itself in india and that also better than anyone else, so what is the need of imports from other resources.

pakistan & chinese fabric which is exported is usually underweight. that may be the reason why their prices are low that from indian prices. and indian quality and consistency is more superior thatn that of china or pakistan
