For those Free members, it is free advertisement to ride on the big waves, to my company I had a number of big surprises.
People from South America asking for my products posted in Alibaba, and people from all over the world and even from my heartland. I wonder, is it because of the Search Engine friendliness of Alibaba keywords entry? When I tried the Search Engines with keywords, my company turns out top of my big competitors. WOW, I am amazed, and I got orders through the Alibaba site.
The investment to be TRUST PASS member pays off. For a mere $350.00 it is worth it. This afternoon, I visited one enquirier for my product, and I asked him how did he know us? .. through Google and Alibaba. I told him it is only $350 and he said 'çheap'.

However, the Alibaba site provides a very fast and effective search engine at the right corner "Search all suppliers" and "Search Resources" below it. For this, the Alibaba site has become a very important media for the promotion of their products, because of the segregation from the external search engines.
This afternoon, I copied two of the Chinese webpages in Alibaba selling the same product and stripped them to their source codes, and discovered the truth about the Alibaba site. It uses the Keywords from the Subject and placed it into the META file = keywords. The description as Category is too narrow and un-articulated. E.g. if my company is selling navigational equipment for ocean vessels, the only category available is ship and boats or transport. In this case, Alibaba has to be more flexible and open up more variations for the types of service or product provided. Perhaps the segmentation can be taken from the examples of the Yellow Pages.

Anyway back to your question. If you run a search with the Google engine for example for motorcycles, those who had listed motocycles in their product description in Alibaba should show out in the list of the search result.
I find that there is none of the Gold Members name or list in the result. However I can get our company result listed as SINGAPORE Supplier of XXXXXx product as TRUST PASS Member in Alibaba.
