I prefer ALWAYS to pay by L/C as first option.
If you are not so familiar, you can get some details here:

Replying to [Admin]:HI EVERYBODY,
FOR PAYMENTS I THINK LC IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR BUYERS AND SELLERS.BUT MOST OF CHINEASE EXPORTER REFUSE TO ACCEPT LC FOR CHARGE.THEY ONLY INSIST ON TT.TT IS ALWAYS RISKY FOR BUYERS AND ITS TOUGH TO SEND MONEY TO A COMPANY ONLY BASIS OF EMAIL CORRESPONDING.
IF BUYER & SELLER BOTH ARE GENUINE THEN THERE IS NO RISK AT ALL IN LC.SELLER CAN ASK REIMBURSEMENT AUTHORITY AND ADD CONFIRMATION ,ITS MEAN A THIRD COUNTRY INTERNATIONAL BANK WILL GIVE GURANTEE TO SELLER THAT THEY ARE TAKING GURANTEE FOR PAY HIM.

Replying to [mwise]:If I were you, I'll play it safe and use L/C as your sole payment mode. It would also be a safety net to have a friend or hire a trustee in China to act on your behalf.
