The Chinese ship building industry has quietly moved up to be world number three!
Shipbuilding in China
In the midst of China?s double digit growth in the domestic market sectors of consumer electronics of large screen television, flat screen LCD, computers, MP players, digital cameras, recorders and so on, there is lesser known growth on the heavy industry for the automobile and shipbuilding sectors.
The Chinese shipbuilding industry has quietly moved up to be world number three, grabbing about 15% of the orders from ship-owners worldwide. 2004 saw the explosive trade, which creates a shortage of vessels to ship the goods out and raw materials into the country. The Chinese shipyards in have 1305 vessels on their order books, averaging 60,000 dwt for each ship.
The Shipbuilding Industry number one player, was Japan before the end of the 20th century, but was overtaken by Korea, and became world number two followed closely by China. Both the top players have 70% market share, being two of the four giants, as in March 2006. has lead in the industry and maintains it by concentrating on high value added buildings of the LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) carriers.
2005-01-05 has total order of 3.51 million tons of ship, a year-to-year growth of 64.5% from 2004, and has their order books filled with 4.6 million tons of ships, of which 88.5% are by foreign owners. Chen Xiaojin, the General Manager of China State Shipbuilding Corporation predicts his country will be world number one in 2015. Two more shipbuilding bases, one in Shanghai Changxing island and one in Longxue at Guangdong Province will be built to cater for this growth.

Presently the types of ships built in the yards of the cities and provinces of:
Chongqing, Dalian, Liaoning, Hubei, Jiangsu, Fujian, Guangzhou, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangxi, Shandong, Hebei, and Tianjin.
Ir Wong Sin Futt, Senior Manager for newbuildings for company, IMC Pan Asia Alliance Pte Ltd, shared his working experience with the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co. Ltd. In Dalian, Liaoning:
? Ten years ago, the Chinese shipbuilding industry was in its infancy, and the quality was inferior to the Koreans, but after five years, there were remarkable progress in the design, technology and construction skills that the ship has matched the standard of the Japanese built vessels.?
Mr. Wong, Senior Manager for Newbuildings representing the owner, also said the delivery time for the Chemical vessels has been shortened drastically. He contributed some photographs for publications with permission.
Dalian, a beautiful city located at the ?finger? of the Liaoning Peninsula nicknamed the ?garden city? is where the shipyard, that built the Chemical Tankers for the AURORA Tankers.

The order books for 2005 will exceed 10 million tons, and the present No. 1 Korea, that is has three major group companies: Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding, and Samsung Heavy Industry based in the southern tip of the Korean peninsula.
