Apr. 16, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China plans to build an airport in the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Gannan in the northwestern Gansu Province, according to the local government.

The new airport, Xiahe Airport, is expected to be completed in 2010. The RMB 700 million project will include building a 3,000-meter-long runway.

The preferred location is 250 km from Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, 56 km from the nearest city, Hezuo, and 72 km from the Xiahe County seat.

The construction work, comprising the land measurement, meteorological observation and environment assessment at the proposed site for the airport, will start soon, according to Ma Xiaojun, an official in charge of transport at the provincial commission.

Gannan prefecture, located in southern Gansu Province, has a population of 680,000, over half of whom are Tibetans.
