In September 1992, American International Assurance Co., Ltd (AIA), a member company of AIG, was granted an insurance license by the People's Bank of China to operate both life and non-life businesses in Shanghai.
On 1st December 1997, the General Insurance Division of AIA Shanghai branch was renamed and established as AIU Insurance Company Shanghai Branch. On 24th March 2004, AIU Insurance Company Shanghai Branch was approved to expand business scope and licensed to sell non-life insurance products to local enterprises and consumers in accordance with China's WTO commitments.
